How Does the Dictionary Search Work?

  1. Select search field:
    Start the application and select the search field at the top of the screen.
    If the search field is not displayed, check that "Look up" is activated in the menu bar.
  2. Select language direction:
    Check that the correct language direction has been selected in the top right corner using the flag symbols.
  3. Enter search term:
    Enter your term into the search field using the keyboard.
    The relevant search results appear even while you are typing. This means that the word has often already been found before the last letter has been typed.
  4. Show dictionary entry:
    From the results list, simply touch the term you want to have translated.
    You will instantly get a clear dictionary display.
  5. Return to search field:
    To return to the search function from an open dictionary entry, tap the search button in the top right corner (magnifying glass symbol).
  6. Clear search field:
    To clear the previous entry in the search field for a new entry, touch the x symbol to the right of the search field.

How does the Joke function work?

With the "Joke of the day" function you will receive a daily English joke in LinguaDict Pro. That this is displayed as a Push message, please activate the “Reminder“ option in the “Jokes" section of the “Settings” menu.

A list of the jokes that you have previously received is available under the “Jokes" section of the menu. The following options and views are available:

Search function:

Search comfortably through your joke data base using a selected English term by entering the term into the search window.

Joke of the day:

This is the category in which the Joke of the Day is displayed. To mark it as a favourite, click on the star on the left margin. The favourite marking can be deactivated by clicking once again on the star.

All Jokes:

This view displays all of the jokes which you have received in chronological order. Click on the joke to open it.

Favourites:

This is where you will find all of the jokes which you have marked as favourites.

Click on the desired joke title in the list in order to display the corresponding joke. You can listen to the joke in either British or American English. The Smiley will support you with an energetic laugh! The underlined terms link directly to the dictionary.

Showing and Hiding Keyboard

The keyboard is shown as soon as you touch the dictionary search field.
The keyboard display is automatically hidden as soon as you scroll through the displayed results list or select a term in the displayed results list.
On the iPad, you can also tap the Close Keyboard button on the bottom right of the keyboard in order to hide the keyboard.

Changing Language Direction

The language direction can be changed very easily using the corresponding buttons in the top right corner of the screen. The set language direction appears dark.
The selected language direction is also shown in the empty search field. (German-English search or English-German search)

Voice Output

LinguaDict offers you the opportunity of having every English dictionary entry read aloud.
Simply tap the desired flag symbol (British or American) next to the term and check that the volume control of your device is not set to mute.

Showing and Deleting Search History

In order to show the search history, select "History" from the menu at the bottom.
The search history shows a list of the dictionary entries that you have accessed.
These can also be called up individually at any time.
In order to delete the search history, tap the Trash icon in the top right corner.

Accessing the Inflection Table

Tap the inflection table symbol in the dictionary entry to access the associated chart.

User-defined Settings

In the "Settings" menu, you can find options for customizing LinguaDict.

  1. Search – number of results:
    Define how many results are displayed in your dictionary search. You can choose from 10, 30, 50, 100, 250 and 500 results. The default setting is 30.
    The higher numbers of results require slightly more time for the search process.
  2. Grammatical information:
    The grammatical information in the dictionary entry can be shown either in abbreviated or full form.
    Example:  vb, t (abbreviated)
                  Verb, transitive (full)
  3. Voice output:
    The voice output settings can be used to adapt the speed and pitch.
