The Listen2Mail application is a user-friendly and adaptable tool for reading out emails on your mobile device. Your emails will be read directly in Listen2Mail, irrespective of your email application. With a number of individual settings, you can adapt Listen2Mail to your requirements and preferences and set up filters if required.
Have your emails read out to you and manage the corresponding audio files. Its intuitive functions make it extremely user-friendly.

Quick Start Guide

Step 1: Message „Please enter your email account.“

When Listen2Mail is launched for the first time, this message asks you to select the Settings button and enter your email account details. This step is necessary for Listen2Mails to read out your emails. Use the „Back“ button to return to the initial screen.

Step 2: Message: „In the filter you can define rules for incoming emails.“

Please tap the Filter button.
Option a) If you would like all new emails to be read out, no filter needs to be created. Simply tap the „Back“ button to return to the initial screen.
Option b) If you would like only certain emails to be read out, you can set up one or more filters. The „Edit“button at the top right will take you to the edit mode. Tap the filter, configure the required settings and save them by tapping the „Save“ button. To activate the newly created filter, first tap „Finish“ followed by the switch directly next to the filter name in order to activate it. The „Back“ button takes you back to the initial screen.

Step 3: Receiving new email audio data

If an envelope is displayed in the blue circle, you have received new emails to be read. Tap the envelope and reading will begin. If you would like your emails to be read automatically (e.g. when driving), go to „Reading of new emails“ in the settings and select the option „Start automatically“. An active Internet connection is required for Listen2Mail to read your emails.

The blue circle:

Tapping the blue circle

the reading function.

If the blue circle is tapped with two fingers while an email is being read (double touch), the reading function skips back to the start of the current email. Reading of the email is repeated. If you would like to skip the email that is currently being read, simply wipe over the blue circle from right to left.

The different views of the blue circle:

No network connection available – retrieving and reading emails is not possible in this state.

Network connection available – if the display is blinking the application is checking whether there are new messages in the inbox.

New messages are available to be read. The number of emails available to be read is displayed as a figure. In addition, a brief sound signal announces the arrival of new emails in Listen2Mail.

An email is currently being read. To pause the reading, tap the blue circle.

This is displayed if the pause function has been activated. To continue reading, please tap the blue circle.

Settings Button

In the Settings menu you can set up your email account and adapt the basic program functions to your requirements. Use the „Back“ button to return to the blue circle at any time.

1. „Email accounts“ section

This is where you can set up your email account, add additional accounts, or deactivate or remove existing accounts. Voice Reader supports email accounts with providers who support the IMAP protocol. These include MobileMe, GoogleMail, Yahoo!, AOL and T-Online,...

Set up account:

To activate the reading function, you need to set up an account after you first start the application. To do so, go to the „Settings“ menu under „Email accounts“ and tap the „Add account“ button. In the next step, select your email provider.

  1. If you have an email account with one of the listed providers (MobileMe, GoogleMail, Yahoo!, AOL or T-Online), tap the corresponding entry. Then enter the following details in the Account Information section:
  1. If your provider is not listed, please select „Other“. Then enter the following details in the Account Information section:

Add an additional account:

To set up the reading function for additional email accounts, tap the „Add account“ option and set up the connection by following the instructions under „Set up account“.

Deactivating and activating an existing account:

To deactivate an existing account, tap the respective account in the „Email accounts“ field to select it and then tap the slide control next to the account to set it to „Off“. To reactivate the reading function for this account, tap the slide control again to set it to „On“. Confirm your entries by tapping the „Save“ button at the top right.

Edit an existing account:

To edit an existing account (e.g. to adjust the name or the server connection following a change), tap it in the „Settings“ menu under „Email accounts“ and carry out the required changes.

Remove account:

To remove an account, go to „Email accounts“ and then select the red „Remove account“ button.

Set up interval for checking emails:

The „Check emails“ option lets you define the interval with which Listen2Mail checks the emails in your inbox. If you need your emails to be read promptly, choose a short interval.

2. „Read new emails“ section Listen2Mail offers you two options for reading your emails.

  1. Start reading automatically:
    If you are using Listen2Mail e.g. when you are driving, you must not touch the mobile device while you are driving the vehicle. Launch Listen2Mail bevor you start your journey. In the „Settings“ menu, go to „Read new emails“ and activate the „Automatically“ option. Emails will now be read directly as soon as you receive them.

  2. Read manually:
    If you do not want reading to start automatically, please go to „Read new emails“ in the „Settings“ menu and activate the „Manually“ option. In this mode, Listen2Mail will only start reading if new emails are available and you tap the blue circle.

3. „Preferred language“ section Under „Language“ , select the language in which you expect to receive your emails for the selected email account. If you additionally activate the „Automatically“ function through the corresponding switch, an automated voice recognition function can be activated so that emails in other languages are also recognized correctly.

4. „Voice“ section By tapping „Male“ or „Female“, you can choose whether you want a male or female voice to read your emails. (Note: a male voice is not available in all languages)

5. „Advanced settings“ section The „Advanced settings“ give you the option to limit the maximum number of words to be read per email (Max. number of words) and to set the upper limit of the memory allocated to storing the email audio files. The bar under „Currently used memory“ indicates the current assignment of memory space.

6. „Auto-Lock“ section

You can prevent the device from switching off automatically when Listen2Mail is active by activating „Never“ under „Auto-Lock“. This ensures that fetching and reading emails is not interrupted if the device is idle. Alternatively, you can select „System settings“. In this mode, the settings according to your specifications in your device's general settings (Settings > General > Auto-Lock) are applied.

You can adjust the Listen2Mail settings at any time. All changes always apply to new emails to be read.

Filter Button

You can set a filter to apply the reading function only to certain emails in your inbox which meet the criteria selected in the filter. This is advisable if you do not wish all emails to be read. You can set up one or more filters.

In the filter menu, each filter can be activated or deactivated with the „On-Off slider“
The Edit button lets you edit or delete an existing filter.
You can set up additional filters by tapping the Add button (+) at the bottom left.
Tap Back at the top left to return to the blue circle.

  1. Setting up a filter

    Tap the „Edit“ button at the top right of the filter menu. Tap the entry „Filter 1“ to carry out adjustments.

    In the „Name“ field , the name "Filter 1" is already entered by default. The designation can be edited freely.
    Start by selecting the email account to which you want to apply the filter in the „Email account“ field. If you only have set up one account in the Listen2Mail settings menu, this will be selected automatically in "Filter 1". This email account can be modified at any time and other accounts can be added.

    Under „Read emails from“ you can choose to only have emails read that are from senders in your contact list. If this is your preference, activate the „All contacts“ option.
    If you would also like to receive emails from senders who are not in your contact list, you can add them under „Specified contacts“ by tapping „Add contact“.
    If you only want emails from particular senders to be read, deactivate the „All contacts“ option under „Read emails from“ and enter the respective email address under „Specified contacts“ or select them from your contact list using the „+“ symbol at the top right.

    Under „Preferred language“ please select the preferred language of your emails for the current filter.
    If you additionally activate the „Automatically“ function through the corresponding switch, an automated language recognition function can be activated so that emails in other languages are also recognized correctly.

    The „Voice“ option lets you define whether the emails that are retrieved through the selected filter are read with a male or female voice. Select „Female“ or „Male“ accordingly. (Note: a male voice is not available in all languages)

    Save the filter settings by selecting the „Save“ button at the top right. This will only become active once either „All contacts“ has been selected under „Read emails“ or at least one email address has been entered in the „Specified contacts“ field.

  2. Add filter
    In the filter menu, tap the „+“ symbol at the bottom left and proceed according to the instructions for „Set up first filter“ vor.
  3. Edit filter
    Tap the „Edit“ button at the top right of the filter menu.
    Select the filter you wish to edit by tapping it. Carry out the desired changes and save them by selecting the „Save“ button at the top right.
  4. Remove filter
    Tap the „Edit“ button at the top right of the filter menu.
    Tap the red Delete symbol to the left of the filter to be removed and confirm the action by selecting the red „Delete“ button on the right-hand side.

Audio Files Button

This displays the audio files for those emails fetched by Listen2Mail.
You can select an audio file to have it read by tapping the corresponding entry.
You can forward or rewind the audio file by moving the slider (at the bottom of the screen) to the right or left.

Interrupt reading: In the list, tap the selection with the Pause symbol. Continue reading: Select the chosen audio file again in the list.
The „Date“ option makes it possible to sort the files by date.
If „Names“ is selected, the emails are grouped by the email senders' names.

To remove audio files, select the „Edit“ option at the top right. Individual email audio files can be removed from the list by tapping them and then selecting „Delete“. Or you can select „Delete all audio files“ button at the end of the list to delete all entries.
To confirm, tap the „Finish“ button at the top right.
To return to the blue circle, select the „Back“ button at the top left.

Start reading new emails automatically or manually

Listen2Mail offers you two options for reading your emails.

  1. Start reading automatically:
    If you are using Listen2Mail e.g. when you are driving, you must not touch the mobile device while you are driving the vehicle. Launch Listen2Mail bevor you start your journey. In the „Settings“ menu, go to „Read new emails“ and activate the „Automatically“ option. Emails will now be read directly as soon as you receive them.

  2. Read manually:
    If you do not want reading to start automatically, please go to „Read new emails“ in the „Settings“ menu and activate the „Manually“ option. Once you receive an email, you will also need to tap the blue circle for it to be read.
